Sunday schools should teach the way to live a virtuous life following the Dhamma - Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardene

by Panadura North Group Corr. - Susil Ratnaweera

"The time has come for the Sunday Schools to take the lead to teach the way to live a virtuous life like true Sinhala Buddhists following the sublime Dhamma." This was stated by Posts, Telecommunications and Upcountry Development Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardene at Pinwatta, Panadura.

"Adults are not likely to miss a Hindi movie shown in various TV channels but, would not attend an annual prize distribution of a Sunday school," Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardene added attending the 57th annual prize distribution of Sri Seelananda Dhamma school of Sri Saddharmakara Pirivena, Pinwatta, Panadura. This occasion was presided over by Ven. Panditha Rekawa Gunasiri Thera, the Chief Incumbent of Dharmaramaya Kaludewala, Panadura.

The Deputy Minister further stated that to raise Sri Lanka from collapsing day by day each one of our community has to cooperate without burdening the temple and the police to do the task.

"Each and every one should do his duty to the upliftment of our Motherland and even when one has the knowledges of the Dhamma and yet does not lead his or her life according to it, that where the most dreadful situation arises," added Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardene.

He further stated that in no way one can justify the assassination of a High Court Judge and thus leaving a dark cloud hanging over the clear skies of the history of the judicial field, though these type of mafias are there in some countries. He said, that Sunday Dhamma Schools are the best grooming places in moulding the young to respect and preserve the race and religion.

Abeygunawardene also said that the solace of a society full of good deeds is worthy even if its members may not have gained university degrees and that the dedication of the principal Ven. Amugoda Somananda Thera of Sri Seelananda Dhamma school, is of great importance and value in building a society with treasured qualities and noble values.

The biggest hindrance for the Sunday schools which strive to save the country are tuition classes conducted on Sundays. The Government promised to halt these classes and also to treat the Sunday schools teacher fairly. But these promises have been ineffective talk and we are disgusted and have had enough of this type of political talk.

To rebuild our country the Government should consider taking meaningful steps to implement the law". Ven. Thlalle Meththananda Thera the Chief Incumbent of Sri Saddharmakara Pirivena and Thapodanaramaya. Mt. Lavinia, and Adhikarana Sangha Nayake of the Western Province have made these observations.

Ven. Panditha Rekawa Gunasiri Thera, the Chief Incumbent of Dharmaramaya, Kaludewala, Panadura; Ven. Pandit Amugoda Somananda Thera, the Principal Sri Seelananda Dhamma School Pinwatta, Panadura; Ven. Kotugoda Jothiratana Thera, the Chief Incumbent of Walukaramaya, Pallimulla, Panadura and Secretary Panadura Sasanarakshaka Mandalaya, Prof. Daya Edirisinghe of Kelaniya University and student Y. S. H. Jayavi also spoke.
