by Nadira Gunatilleke A ceremony to commemorate the 186th death anniversary of ancient Sinhala hero `Weera Keppetipola from Uva Wellassa who sacrificed his life while fighting the colonial rule was held at the Maha Maluwa, Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy on a grand scale, a Ministry spokesman said. He said, floral tributes were placed at the Weera Keppetipola statue and a formal army salutation was held. A procession too was held from the Keppetipola statue to D.S. Senanayake Library, Kandy with the participation of a 1,000 people. Weera Keppetipola commemoration speech was delivered by the Co-Secretary of the National Patriotic Movement (Desha Hithaishee Jathika Vyaparaya) and Senior Lecturer of the Sri Jayawardhanapura University Ven. Dambara Amila Thera. This is the first time the Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Ministry took the lead in organising on event of this nature. Earlier, ancient Sinhala heros who sacrificed their lives while fighting against colonial rulers, were not given due recognition. Minister Herath, Deputy Minister Samantha Vidyaratne, Central Province Governor Monty Gopallawa, Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake and Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Ministry Secretary A.P.A. Gunasekara also spoke. |
