'Mata Hamuvu Rasavath Minissu': Memories in watercolours by Chandani Jayatilleke
Artist Tissa Hewavitarne will hold an exhibition of watercolour paintings of scenery and cartoons and caricatures of renowned persons at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery from December 4 to 7. The preview will be held on December 4 at 6.30 p.m. in the presence of film directress and a former ambassador, Sumithra Peries and a gathering of distinguished invitees. Thereafter, the exhibition will be open for the public from December 5 to 7 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tissa Hewavitarne always wanted to pay tribute to a group of interesting people who have dedicated their life to arts, culture, media and enterprises and have contributed their best to the country.
This, he finally chose to do through his medium - art. And his idea was to hold an art exhibition. He started the preparation work to hold an exhibition of caricatures and portraits of a select few persons along with a collection of 80 watercolour paintings. The exhibition is aptly named 'Mata Hamuvu Rasawath Minissu' meaning 'The interesting people I have met'. "Throughout my career, I have met various men and women who have done marvellous things in their professions and created many job opportunities through their professions. Some have brought honour to the country while others have silently battled for different causes. This exhibition is meant to honour these people - the proud sons and daughters of Mother Lanka," Tissa said. Incidentally, Tissa specialises in watercolours which medium pleases him the most. In this exhibition, Tissa makes an effort to combine his talent in many different fields such as watercolours, cartoons and caricatures and bring the best out of each field at the same time. Tissa is a self-taught artist. However, he was highly inspired by renowned cartoonists/artists G.S. Fernando and Sarlis Master and Susil Premaratne.
"I am thankful to their guidance and assistance given to me to build up my own style of arts," he says. An old boy of S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia, Tissa continued his
studies at th In 1958, he started his career as an advertising artist at J Walter Thompson (JWT). From JWT, he went to CWE Advertising Department and Ravi Advertising Ltd as a Junior Executive. From advertising, Tissa stepped into the world of print media by offering part-time work for the Lankadipa. With that experience he later secured better positions as the key artist with the Udaya and Virakesari newspapers. Tissa's talent in art and experiences in media organisations paved him the way to find a position as the Advertising Manager at Mahajana Newspapers Ltd, where he was extremely successful. He also worked in the Ministry of Education in-charge of its Advertising section for the Akura newspaper, prior to his appointment at the Advertising Department of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd.
In 1981, he left for Bahrain where he worked as a draughtsman in the Ministry of Works and Agriculture. During his stay in Bahrain for over two decades, he also contributed cartoons for a leading newspaper there. Having lived abroad for a long time, Tissa has settled down in Mt. Lavinia recently by opening a private art gallery at 69/4, Templers Road, Mt Lavinia. He has so far held 13 art exhibitions; four in Sri Lanka and nine abroad - in Germany and Bahrain. |
