Junior fast bowlers for training Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has finalised a pool of under-14 and under-16 fast bowlers after an islandwide search using the latest technology used in other countries at present. The equipment comprising of a Dartfish software, digital cameras, speed gun and a special computer programme are being used by SLC to identify promising bowlers, batsmen and wicket keepers, from among the under-14 and under-16 players who participated in the inter-school tournaments during the year 2004. This is the culmination of a project initiated by Mr. Thilanga Sumathipala, when he was President of then BCCSL and launched by the SLC's Operations Department three years ago to prepare a complete databank of the performances of schoolboy cricketers throughout the country using a state-of-the-art computer programme. It was done in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association and the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology. Explaining the new technology used for the talent search, SLC's Director - Cricket Operations, Bandula Warnapura said that "Dartfish is a universally accepted software for coaching and analaysing players' skills and performances in several other sports. This is the first time that this software is being used for cricket. The national coaches are using this software and the other equipment to identify the mistakes and technical faults while bowling, batting and fielding in order to take corrective action," he added. It is also proposed to use the equipment in analysing our players at national and international level and develop their skills and performances, based on the findings. The Coaching Department of SLC's National Development Centre and the Provincial Cricket Associations have cooperated in conducting the talent search. The selected fast bowlers of under-14 and under-16 with their bowling speeds are as follows and special training programme is being conducted on two days a month for the under-14s, at present and the programme for under-16 will start from January 2005.
