'Karu' in charge of Tour de Lanka by Chris Dhambarage The Tour de Lanka cycle race is not all about competitors, winners and losers but it also has a special place for the officials, judges and time keepers. Incidentally the Chief Commissaire and the President of the Commissaire panel for this year's Tour de Lanka cycling classic will be in the hands of N. Karunaratne a veteran in the local cycling scene. Karunaratne is no stranger where the Tour de Lanka cycle race is concerned and came out victorious in the 1982 standard class race. He was also the second runner up in the racing class event in 1985 behind A. M. Sumanaweera and Boniface Perera. In the following year he performed even better coming in as the first runner up with Sumanaweera again taking the first place. In 1987 Karunaratne won the National Insurance cycle race which was also the first classified cycle race in Sri Lanka where only the top 40 cyclists participated. Karunaratne, after graduating from the Peradeniya University became actively involved in cycling development and was the secretary of the Shimano Cycling Club in Anuradhapura and President of the Anuradhapura District Cycling Association. He was also the President of the Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka from 1988 to 2001. The inaugural SAARC cycling championships was held during this period and Karunaratne was also responsible in introducing UCI rules for the first time. In addition exams for commissaires and coaches and calcification of riders licensing of riders and race officials, helmet and cycling jerseys were also introduced during this period. |
