A national festival on the theme 'Nilwala Harasara' will be held in Matara from December 5 to 12 to mark the 10th anniversary of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's assumption of office and honour her for the epochal service she had rendered for the development of Ruhuna specially the people of the Matara district.

The festival has been organised by the 'Nilwala Foundation' (Padanama) under the guidance of Ports, Aviation, Media and Information Minister and Matara District MP Mangala Samaraweera and the District Secretary of Matara.

Secretary, Nilwala Foundation Ananda Dharmasiri said the festival will begin with a 'Gangarohana Pooja', an ancient Buddhist ritual held in the Nilwala Ganga. The festival will include several special features such as 'Ruhunu Sports Festival' organised by the Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry to upgrade sports skills among youth, a cultural festival organised by the Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Ministry to appreciate literary and artworks of Ruhuna and a medical clinic and 'Jothishya Pola' (Astrological Fair) organised by the Indigenous Medicine Ministry.

Cultural events and launching of development projects will take place in each electorate in the district daily to coincide with the festival.

He said a photographic exhibition organised by the Media Ministry, a display by Armed Forces and Police, an IT exhibition titled 'E-Village' and a children's park titled 'Samanala Uyana' will add colour to the festival. A special highlight of this festival organised with the sponsorship of a large number of state and private sector institutions will be the presentation of "Ruhunu Prathibha" honorary title on 10 personalities born in Matara who had brought honour and fame to the nation.
