by Hemantha Dep A 53 year old woman who was operated on at the Colombo National Hospital on four occasions to remove a stone in the stomach came by her death, allegedly due to leakage of electricity from a surgical instrument used in the operation. This was revealed at the inquest held in respect of the death of Sammuth Husena Kaleel of Jinthupitiya, Kotahena, who was warded in Ward No. 63 of the Colombo National Hospital with a history of a stone in the stomach. On the evidence of several witnesses including Dr. M.N. Rahul Haq, AJMO, Colombo, who conducted the autopsy the City Coroner Mohamed Ashraff Rumy reserved his verdict for December 29. Dr. Risvi Sanun who was alleged to have taken part in the surgery was not present in Court at first and notice was issued on him. The deceased's daughter Hamsathul Risana Begum (29) in her evidence before the City Corner stated that her mother was admitted to Ward No. 63 of Colombo National Hospital for the removal of a stone in the stomach and that her mother, two days after the operation suffered a swell of the stomach and on inquiry from Dr. Risvi Samoon, she was told that the swell was due to infection of a burn injury in the stomach following a leakage of electricity in the process of the surgery. The surgeon Dr. Risvi Jashan Samoon who operated on the deceased patient said in evidence that on his advice the deceased was admitted to Ward No. 63 for an operation and that he attended to the operation with the help of three other doctors and a nurse in charge of the camera and that the operation involved burning of the bile. He further said that on April 03, she was further operated for removal of water accumulated in the stomach and with subsequent complication she was operated on three occasions in addition to the first one. Attorney-at-law Aloysius Perera looked after the interests of the deceased. Verdict was reserved for December 29. |
