Judges security division inaugurated today

The Judges Security Division which consists 140 police personnel will be inaugurated today (23). Colombo High Court Judges, Colombo Chief Magistrate and Negombo Magistrate will be provided with two security personnel and a squad. Their residences also will be provided with Police Guards.

Secretary to the High Court Judges' Association, High Court Judge Rohini Perera said that High Court Judge Sarath Ambepitiya faced such tragic untimely death due to the lack of security they were provided with.

Each Colombo High Court Judge, Colombo Chief Magistrate and the Negombo Magistrate will be given two security officers and a squad. Other High Court Judges will also get the same security within two weeks after having discussed the shortage of vehicles. The Court premises will also be provided tight security.

She further said that they were promised two months ago, that a Judges Security Division will be set up within two weeks, subsequently to a discussion between High Court Judges' Association presided by the late High Court Judge Sarath Ambepitiya with senior Police Officers including former Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Justice Ministry officials held at the Justice Ministry.

High Court Judge Perera further said after the retirement of the former IGP as she was informed, the Ministry has sent three letters to the Police Department referring to the security of the High Court Judges, but, the decision was not implemented.
