Sampanthan to make a statement on the situation in Jaffna following the Velvetithurai shooting incident. This was following UPFA MP Wimal Weerawansa opposing Sampanthan when the latter rose to make a special statement regarding the situation in Jaffna. Weerawansa pointed to the Chair that Sampanthan cannot make such a statement while the House was debating the budget. He requested the Chair not to allow the Member to make this statement as it was against Standing Orders. Gayantha Karunatilleke who was in the Chair at that time told Sampanthan that he could not allow him to make that statement and suspended the sittings of the House for ten minutes as TNA MPs spilled into the well of the House protesting against the decision. Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara later taking the Chair said under standing orders the MP cannot make a special statement. He said the Government will take appropriate action to settle the situation in Jaffna, following the unfortunate incident in Velvettithurai. |
