ANCL Tour de Lanka: Elite riders to cover 921.5 kms. by Bernard Perera Tour de Lanka which was revived after a lapse of ten years is to go round the country from December 5 to 12 organised by Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. (ANCL) and conducted by the Interim Committee for Cycling. The organiser and the Interim Committee representative who met yesterday disclosed the changes of the route for the tour proper and the prize structure for all three events. The main event for racing cycles commence with time trial on December 5 from Panadura to Moratuwa, a distance of 5 km. December 6 will be a rest day. The tour proper begins on December 7 opposite Laka House and proceed to Dambulla via Negombo, Kochchikade, Pannala, Kurunegala and Dambulla where after break of two hours the riders proceed to Anuradhapura. On the following day they will peddle to Trincomalee via Maradankadawala, Ganewalpola and Habarana. The riders then will move to Kantale for the night. On the following day riders will cycle through Dambulla, Matale and Katugastota to Kandy. On 10th December the cyclists will race for 25 rounds along Kandy Lake to cover a distance of 57 kms. The penultimate stage from Kandy will end up at Ratnapura which covers 128 kms. They will peddle through Kadugannawa, Mawanella, Kegalle and turn off at Galigamuwa to reach Avissawella and finish at Ratnapura. The organisers made the following change for the final lap which was earlier scheduled to commence from Kalutara and to finish at Matara. Now all the riders will be brought to Colombo for the final stage. The race is to be flagged off at 7.00 a.m. opposite Lake House will proceed along Galle Road to Matara. This change has also added 43 kilometers making this stage a 160 kms. The Nilwala Sawariya Race for standard cycle will also start at the same venue at 8.00 a.m. Meanwhile the ladies race will be conducted from Galle to Matara on December 12. Entries for the racing event for elite riders will close on December 2. Entries appear daily on ANCL publications, Dinamina, Daily News and Sunday Observer. Entry coupons for standard men's and women's races are accepted till December 10. It was also disclosed that already three foreign teams from Holland, Mongolia and Hong Kong have confirmed their participation. The cyclists who compete in the Tour de Lanka will now have to cover a total distance of 921.5 kms. with the present change of route. Winners of all stages are to receive cash awards. |
