A senior Sri Lankan journalist working in Saudi Arabia, who was on a brief visit to the island described the budget as a common man's budget which would benefit people from all walks of life. "The budget, first of its kind in the recent years has been designed not only to cater to the needs of the people but it has also been planned for the country to march forward towards national development", said Mohammed Rasooldeen who is attached to Arab News, which is the number one English newspaper in the Middle East. Speaking to Daily News, Mohammed Rasooldeen said the budget would give happy news to the one million Sri Lankan workers in foreign countries. "More than 70% percent of the Lankan workers in the Middle East are domestic aides who are really yearning for a housing loan of this nature", said Rasooldeen, adding that he was happy that the government has recognised the services of the Lankan workers abroad who are contributing to the national coffers. Rasooldeen pointed out that under the present circumstances, the salary raise for the Government servants and pensioners indicate the concern of the Government towards its masses. While wishing the Government in its progressive policies he stressed that the budget proposals should be implemented with the right spirit of the planners who wanted to deliver the goods for the benefit of the masses. |
