Sexual abuse case:

Grandfather remanded till November 30

by Sarath Malalasekera

A grandfather remanded for allegedly having sexually abused his 13 year-old grand daughter was further remanded till November 30 by Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena.

Sergeant Daya Rajamanthri of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) who produced the grandfather earlier told court that the other grandfather who is alleged to have sexually abused the teenager is evading arrest.

Rajamanthri told court the victim's mother, employed in the Middle East, had left the child in the care of the two Seeyas (one her own father and the other that of her husband's) at their home in Pannipitiya.

According to the statement obtained from the victim, the two had abused the child sexually for several days.

On an application by Rajamanthri, the Judge earlier directed the victim be produced before the Judicial Medical Officer for a comprehensive medical report.

The Judge ordered NCPA officers to arrest the suspect evading arrest and produce him before court.
