by Nadira Gunatilleke The Social Welfare and Women's Empowerment Ministry extended its home gardening project to Moneragala district recently. Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Minister Sumedha G. Jayasena distributed coconut saplings to all women home gardeners in the Moneragala district. The project was in operation during the past three years. Arrangements have already been made to cover 15 more Divisional Secretariat divisions within this year under the project's fourth phase of a Social Welfare and Women's Empowerment Ministry spokesman said. He said during this year, the fourth phase of the home gardening project will be implemented in Harispaththuwa, Nawalapitiya, Habaraduwa, Kahatagasdigiliya, Kantale, Damana, Nayanathiv, Panduwasnuwara, Badalkumbura, Siyambalanduwa, Bibile, Medagama, Kataragama, Madulla and Buttala Divisional Secretariat divisions. The ministry will provide scientific agricultural training, tool kits and fertiliser to the women. During 2001 and 2002, the first and second phases of the home gardening projects were implemented at 47 Divisional Secretariat divisions providing training for about 2,600 women. Certificates were awarded to women who successfully completed the project. National level winners of a home gardening competition were awarded certificates at the International Women's Day. During 2003, 25 projects were implemented at 23 Divisional Secretariat divisions under the project's third phase. Separate projects were implemented for the benefit of Sinhala and Tamil women in Matale, Raththota and Ukuwela Divisional Secretariat divisions. The Matale Economic Development Project funded home gardening project implemented in the Matale Divisional Secretariat division. |
