The new University in the Uva Province (the 14th State funded University) will commence construction in 2005. The construction will be in stages so that the first batch of new students will be admitted from the 2005 Advanced Level to commence studies in January 2006, states a Education Ministry press release. The new Divisions in the university will be Arts & Science. These will be conducted courses in Agriculture, Physical Science, Biological Science, Arts & Humanities and is estimated that 800 students will be provided with placements. Unlike in other universities where students are confined an arts stream, science stream or an agriculture stream where students will have the opportunity to gain broader knowledge by selection courses from different streams to complete the educational objectives. This university will be focusing on education on the value addition to local resource base. It will also provide greater opportunities for the Uva population to benefit from its services particularly on the agricultural extension activities. The Project Implementation Team has made plans to include new hostel facilities, recreational and other welfare facilities for students and staff according to a novel method. The University will be in Badulla. |
