Top riders for Tour de Lanka

by Chris Dhambarage

Some of the top racing riders are expected to compete at this years Tour de Lanka cycle race which will be worked off in five different stages from December 7 to 12.

The Tour de Lanka is organised by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) and conducted by the Interim Committee for Cycling in Sri Lanka (CFSL) in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Police.

A total of over one hundred and fifty competitors are expected to join the starting list of this race which has been revived after a lapse of eight years.

Apart from the three Armed forces and Sri Lanka Police several other top competitors representing their clubs will also be vying for honours at this race which has been stretched to a distance of over nine hundred kilo metres.

This years race will have a rest day for the first time in the history after the completion of the third stage from Trincomalee to Kandy where the distance will be 128 kilometres. However the competitors will participate in a mini circuit race on the rest day around the Kandy Lake and Mahamaya College covering a distance of approximately 40 kilometres.

The rest day will certainly provide the riders the much needed break as they prepare themselves for the important fourth and fifth stages on December 11 and 12 respectively. The fourth stage will be on from Kandy to Ratnapura via Kegalle and Avissawella. The most grueling part of the tour will be the fifth and final stage where the riders are expected to cover nearly 200 kilometres from Kalutara to Matara.

The competitors will proceed along Horana, Kalutara and Galle before finishing at Nupe, Matara. The first stage of the race on December 7 too will be a tough route from Colombo to Anuradhapura via Kurunegala where the distance will be around 199 kilo metres.

In the second stage the competitors are expected to move further towards East and will finish at Trincomalee having covered a distance of 184 kilo metres.

There will be another standard race for men on December 12 from Ratnapura to Matara while a standard race for women too is to be worked off also on December 12 from Galle to Matara. Details and entry coupons will appear shortly in the ANCL publications.
