News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Consensus among southern political parties, the need - President by Duminda Guruge Consensus among the southern political parties is a must to continue peace talks with the LTTE and to solve the North East problem through negotiations, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga stressed yesterday.
Addressing the ceremony to induct the 24th President of the Organisation of Professional Associations of Sri Lanka at the BMICH, she said as the President of the country she committed herself to solve the North East problem and added she would continue her efforts. President Kumaratunga said not only the political parties but also the professionals in the country could contribute towards solving the North East problem through the National Advisory Council for Peace and Reconciliation. She said the Government through the National Advisory Council for Peace and Reconciliation expected contribution from all segments of society in ushering permanent peace in the country. Referring to the media reports on her recent comments on Judiciary and the Police, President Kumaratunga said she only meant that a section of the Judiciary and the Police service were corrupt. She said it was unfair to have criticised her comments on the Judiciary and the Police taking those references in isolation. UNP Deputy Leader and Gampaha District MP Karu Jayasuriya speaking prior to the President at this function observed the need for the southern political parties to unite to solve the North East problem. Karu Jayasuriya referring to the President's comments on the Judiciary and the Police also said as a political party they were ready to extend their support to the President to minimise corruption in the country. |
