Annual Congress of the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture

The sixteenth (16th) Annual Congress of the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture (PGIA), University of Peradeniya will be held at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre, Gannoruwa, Peradeniya from 18th to 19th of November 2004. The chief guest of the occasion will be Jeff Taft-Dick, Country Representative of the World Food Programme of the United Nations, states an Institute Press release.

The congress provides a forum for the young scientists to present their latest research to the scientific community. People 'learn by doing'. They strengthen their own capacity by engaging in research and they are motivated to transfer their knowledge. The demand for knowledge is growing. The current emphasis on knowledge is a widespread concept.

The research presentations at the Annual Congress will provide a kaleidoscopic view of the cross disciplinary trends in recent Agricultural Research. The factual research information which leads to knowledge is a vital base for successful policy making.

Thirty eight research papers on areas such as Crop Physiology, Soil and Water Management, Food Science & Technology, Animal Science, Post-Harvest Technology, Waste Management, Molecular Biotechnology and Biosafety, Modelling and Forecasting and Plant Biology and Biochemistry will be presented at the Congress. The research work is not only adding new scientific knowledge to the existing pool of knowledge but also it has the potential for venturing into commercial investment. Partnership of Agriculture and the Industry is an area which has a common global interest for the development of the sector. A paper on designing a 'Rotary solar hybrid dryer for small scale copra processing is included among the presentations. Waste management in urban areas is another common issue, and a research on Municipal Waste Management will be presented at the congress. An economic analysis of demand for cereals, Drought tolerant sugar cane varieties for dry areas, A study on storability of rice seeds, Climatic change in Low Country Wet Intermediate Region, Irrigation and water management practices at tail-end of Uda Walawe Irrigation Scheme, Tomato hybrids for Dry Zone conditions, Molybdenum supplementation for goats are a cross section of the research presentations.

In addition to these presentations, Prof. A.L.T. Perera, Project Coordinator of the National Biosafety Framework of Sri Lanka will make a presentation as an invited speaker. Dr. R.O.B. Wijesekera, former Chairman of the National Science and Technology Commission will be the guest speaker at the closing ceremony to be held on the 19th.

All these research studies will be published in the 'Tropical Agricultural Research' the official publication of the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture. An electronic version of this publication will also be released. Dr. C.M.B. Dematawewa serves as the Coordinator of the Congress 2004.
