Hindu priest knocked down: Jaffna calms-down after early unrest by Asanga Warnakulasuriya Tension ran high yesterday in Kodikamam, Jaffna following an accident where a Hindu priest riding a motorcycle was knocked down by an Army water bowser. Later an angry mob numbering about 1,000 persons had set fire to several Police motorcycles and pelted stones at the SLMM vehicles, Jaffna Police said. Jaffna SSP Wanaguru told the Daily News yesterday that at the time of the incident, a Hindu priest identified by police as Varatharaja Sarma (24) was travelling in a motorcycle. Police investigations had revealed that both vehicles were moving towards the same direction. It is alleged that the bowser had turned to the left, the SSP added. Police anti-riot squads were called to bring the situation under control. Later the tension eased out following the requests made by the SLMM representatives and Tamil National Alliance MP Nadaraja Ravirajah who visited the scene, Police said. |
