Youth shot dead: Residents attack police by Mahinda Kulatunga and Embilipitiya group correspondent Dharmadasa M. Kuruppu Pahanaduwa, a hamlet in Colambage Ara, Uda Walawe, turned into a mini battlefield yesterday morning (14) when residents ran amok, hoisting black flags and attacking the police with stones following the fatal police shooting of a 25-year-old youth. Shops in the area were closed due to the unrest. The victim identified as T.W. Sandun Kumara was the pillion rider on a motorcycle that ignored police orders to stop on Saturday night. Police said the motorcycle was ordered to stop at a checkpoint but the riders continued to proceed. The police then shot at the cycle and the pillion rider received the shot. The residents' protests continued into the evening. Two constables were injured in the stoning. Police called reinforcements from neighbouring stations to bring the situation under control. Senior police officers visited the scene to conduct investigations. The demonstrators, more than a thousand in number, burned tyres all over the Udawalawa-Thanamalvila highway obstructing the passage of vehicles and attacked the police who deployed the riot squad to tear gas and disperse the crowd. The mob then moved towards the Udawalawe clock-tower and smashed the police post there. The passage of traffic along Udawalawa-Thanamalvila was delayed for five hours. Since the Post Mortem Inquest could not be held at the spot, the body of the deceased was removed to the Embilipitiya Base Hospital and the Inquest is to be conducted today. A police team led by Embilipitiya ASP Eardley Fernando is conducting investigations. |
