Lankans in UK to set up software company here

from Sudarshana Perera in London

Export Lanka.com Ltd, an ICT web portal and company in UK will set up a software company in Sri Lanka in January to develop software solutions for the UK market. The venture 'JayaSoft' and Export Lanka Ltd will be kicked off with an investment of over Sterling Pounds 50,000 per annum.

The investment comes in the wake of the Sri Lankan businessmen in the UK and the worldover taking a robust role to bring in foreign exchange to Sri Lanka. The expatriates have also developed a web portal 'Exportlanka.com' to give a global exposure for Sri Lanka's economy in the international arena.

A member of the Export Lanka.com Ltd, Roland Appuhamy told the Daily News that their new software development company will design software and ICT solutions for UK based companies and added that it will help boost Sri Lanka as the global hub for Business Processes Outsourcing and IT enabled services.

"We are doing our best to bring in business to the country as it will bring in foreign exchange to Sri Lanka and it will spur the growth of the economy and employment opportunities," Appuhamy said.

Speaking on the web portal 'Exportlanka.com', he said that the web initiative will bring in value added benefits as a one-stop-shop while creating opportunities to would-be entrepreneurs and small businesses the chance to access and compete in the international arena. 'The web portal is designed, implemented and operational within the UK for economic prudence and strategic importance', he said.

"As expatriates living in the UK, we could improve the business ties between the two countries and investors in the UK have started looking at Sri Lanka as a potential destination to enter the South Asian and Asian Pacific Region', he said. "We will stamp our seal to bring in foreign exchange to Sri Lanka and to provide job opportunities for post graduates," he said.

Export Lanka.com Ltd is an ICT based company owned by three Sri Lankan expatriates living in the UK and they are due to give a presentation at the Sri Lankan embassy in UK this week on the potential on investing in Sri Lanka. The business community is also very active to find UK investors to set up joint ventures and other investment ventures with Sri Lankan based companies.

The ICT sector has topped its agenda as the UK investors are looking at Sri Lanka due to investor friendly policies adopted by the government. They also commended the establishment of the Information and Communication Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) saying that it will provide a facilitator role to attract potential ICT investments to Sri Lanka.
