ANCL organised Cycle Tour : Tour de Lanka under UCI rules by Chris Dhambarage The Interim Committee for Cycling in Sri Lanka will conduct a prologue time trial for the first time at the Tour de Lanka cycling classic which will be worked off in five stages from December 7 to 12. The Tour de Lanka race is organised by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) and conducted by the Interim Committee for Cycling in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Police. The prologue time trial is an international rule approved by the Union Cyclists International (UCI) and this will determine the position of each cyclist for the starting list on the opening day. The winner of the prologue time trial will wear the yellow jersey and the overall leader after each stage will follow the same. The ICC hopes to conduct the prologue time trial the day before the main race probably along the Galle Road covering a distance of four to eight kilo metres. The ICC expects over 150 competitors to participate in this race which will stretch to a distance of over 700 kilo metres. The most gruelling part of the tour will be the fifth and final stage on December 12 where the riders are expected to cover nearly 200 kilo metres from Kalutara to Matara. The competitors will proceed along Horana, Kalutara and Galle before finishing at Nupe, Matara. The first stage of the race on December 7 too will be a tough route from Colombo to Anuradhapura via Kurunegala where the distance will be around 199 kilo metres. In the second stage the competitors are expected to move further towards East and will finish at Trincomalee having covered a distance of 184 kilo metres. In the third stage the riders will travel from Trincomalee to Kandy via Dambulla and Matale before participating in a 40 kilo metre circuit race around the Kandy Lake on December 10. The fourth stage will be on December 11 from Kandy to Ratnapura via Kegalle and Avissawella. |
