Muralitharan's future depends on surgeon's assessment by Sa'adi Thawfeeq Speculation has been rife that Sri Lanka's ace spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is planning to make a comeback to international cricket from injury in the second cricket Test against New Zealand in January next year. Muralitharan who is recuperating from an operation in his right arm has been out of cricket for the past three months. His manager Kushil Gunasekera said that Muralitharan has been 'rather enthusiastic to try and play'. But whether Muralitharan is ready to make a comeback to the international fold will only be known after he visits his surgeon Dr. David Young in Melbourne towards the end of the month. Dr Young is expected to review his shoulder and advice him what progress it has made and, when he could start turning it over. Muralitharan underwent surgery in his bowling shoulder to remove a ganglion cyst which was causing a fluid build up around the nerves as a result of him bowling so many overs during his 12-year cricket career. He was not named in the squad of 20 players picked by the national selectors on Monday for training ahead of the New Zealand tour which commences in mid-December. While Muralitharan is in Australia the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation of Victoria will host a gala dinner for him at Knox Tavern in Wantirna South on November 26 where Dr. Young will introduce the Channel 4 video of Muralitharan bowling with a metal arm brace. Presentations will also be made by Bradman's publisher Tom Thompson and Barbados captain and sports psychologist Joe Hoad. Tickets which were priced at 50 Australian dollars have all been sold out according to SLCFV trustee Dr. Quintus de Zylva, who is also the official representative of Sri Lanka Cricket in Australia. The proceeds of this dinner will be given to the Muralitharan-Gunasekera Foundation. Vaas to join Foundation Sri Lanka fast bowler Chaminda Vaas is set to join the Muralitharan-Gunasekera Foundation, a charitable institution involving humanitarian community projects. As an initial donation towards joining the Foundation Vaas has offered to sponsor 100 schoolchildren in the Nuwara Eliya district. These children will be provided with essential school items in a pack comprising shoes, school bags and stationary of their choice. It is a strange coincidence that Muralitharan and Vaas have got together for a charitable cause. They are Sri Lanka's leading bowlers having taken nearly 1500 wickets between them in both versions of the game (Test and One-dayers) and been the architects of many victories the country has achieved in its history including winning the 1996 World Cup. |
