To commemorate the World Science Day, the forum for Research and Development, a professional organisation dedicated to develop a research culture in Sri Lanka called on professionals in the scientific arena to work for the common good of man. "Anyone who claims to represent the people and their future, cannot talk of the nation's tomorrow or peace by disregarding science and technology. The reason being that; on one hand, the massive gains of modern technology is part and partial of the future, and on the other hand, those same gains if directed in the wrong way, will bring destruction of immeasurable magnitude upon mankind. "The bitter truth is that; many of the professional organisations in Sri Lanka as well as the scientific community, unfortunately do not represent people's wishes, their agenda or the welfare of the people. Far removed from the hopes and aspirations of the common man., they are ignorant of their social responsibilities and are without even a professional viewpoint on the important national issues. "For these organisations science and technology means, only the intellectual debates conducted behind closed doors. Within this context they do not have the ability or the need to recognise the social responsibility of converting scientific knowledge into policies and practices or establishing a dialogue with policy makers and politicians. "This is an earnest appeal meant for those intellectuals, who live in the real world to come forward to fulfill this void," Director of the Forum, Dr. Athula Sumathipala said in a press release. |
