by M. P. Muttiah The 42nd World Congress of Medicina Alternativa will be held in Colombo from November 27 to December 5. Delegates from 142 countries including Brazil, Mexico, the USA, Sweden, South Africa, Czech Republic, Paraguay, China and Taiwan will participate. The theme of the Congress will be the Integration of All Medicines, Integration of all Healing Methods, for the benefit of mankind. Medicina Alternativa also celebrates this year as the Year of the Alfred Nobel Award for Complementary and Alternative Medicines. The Nobel Foundation in Sweden has approved that Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) practitioners are entitled to be nominated by Medicina Alternativa for the Alfred Nobel Prize. The inaugural ceremony will be held on November 27 at the BMICH presided over by the Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara, who was also a former Minister of Indigenous Medicine. The Chairperson of the Congress is Anton Jayasuriya. The delegates will be visiting Mihintale to see the ruins of a 2000 years old General Hospital, the oldest excavated hospital, including surgery, in the world. The delegates also will visit the oldest Allopathy Hospital and Medical College in Asia, the Samuel Fiske Green Memorial Hospital in Manipay, which is 154 years old. The delegates will make presentations on Alternative Medicines and discussions on the establishment of an Integrated Medical School and Medical Clinic in the North. An Integrated Medical Council for the whole world will be established at these meetings in Jaffna. This would be a historic step in the integration of medicines. An integrated medical clinic will be formally opened in Jaffna on December 5. A long five-element Taostic fireworks display in Jaffna for the patients and foreign delegates will be held in Jaffna. Army and LTTE officials will be the invitees. Meanwhile, the Open University of Complementary Medicines has announced the opening of the Faculty of Integrated Medicines in Jaffna on January 15. It would commence courses in Acupuncture and other complementary medicines. The courses would be conducted by Professors nominated from 142 countries who have recognised the courses. Scholarships too will be provided to the outstanding students. |
