The United States announced that the 2006 U.S. Diversity Visa Lottery has opened, with registration for those seeking to win a chance to immigrate to the United States open until January 7,2005. Each year, 50,000 permanent resident visas are awarded to citizens of countries that have historically low rates of immigration to the United States. There are over one hundred countries that are eligible to participate in the 2006 Lottery, including Sri Lanka and the Maldives. A full list of countries that are eligible to participate and further information can be found at http.// travel.state.gov/ visa/ immigrants types diversity 3.html. In the 2005 lottery, three hundred and eighty-six (386) individuals from Sri Lanka were selected. Applications for the 2006 Diversity Visa Lottery will only be available online, at www.dv.lottery.state.gov. There will be no paper or email registration offered. Additionally, there is no fee for the registration and no need to apply through a broker or agency. Any intermediaries who offer assistance to prepare applications do so without the consent or authority of the U.S. Government, the release said. Once applications are received, they will be processed and winners will be selected at random by a computer. Receipt of more than one entry per person will disqualify the person from registration, regardless of the source of the entry. Winners of the Lottery will be eligible to apply for a permanent resident visa, commonly called a "green card." Winning the lottery, however, does not automatically entitle one to the immigration visa. Winners will still have to meet other eligibility requirements and be interviewed by a U.S. consular official. |
