by Sarath Malalasekera Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena yesterday released former UNP Minister S.B. Dissanayake on bail when he was produced before court by official of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption under the Bribery Act. The Judge ordered Dissanayake to furnish cash bail in Rs. 25,000 and a bond of Rs. 10 million with two sureties. Granting bail, the Judge directed Dissanayake to appear in court on January 27, 2005. The Bribery Commission officials told court that they conducted investigations against Dissanayake on an information by the Commission. Investigations revealed that Dissanayake being a Minister and an MP of the previous regime had earned several immovable and moveable properties from March 31, 1994 to September 30, 2001 and Dissanayake had spent about Rs. 29 million more than his known income. Dissanayake was given sufficient time to explain about his earnings. Bribery officials said Dissanayake had submitted an affidavit in respect of his income, but the Commission was not satisfied with his explanations and decided to indict him before High Court of Colombo. President's Counsel Ananda Wijesekera who appeared with President's Counsel Srinath Perera for Dissanayake submitted to court that his client had declared all his income and earnings to the Inland Revenue Department. Judge: Did Dissanayake assist in the investigations? Bribery Officials: Yes. The Commission has no objection to Dissanayake being granted bail. Several UNP MPs including Prof. G.L. Pieris were present in court yesterday. |
