Rs. 650 million clean energy project to be set up in Trinco by Ramani Kangaraarachchi The pioneering clean energy project using biomass energy will be set up in Trincomalee by Tokyo Power Company (Lanka) shortly with the support of BOI's North East Regional Office in order to regenerate economic activity in Trincomalee. A subsidiary of the giant Japanese multinational Mitsui, Tokyo Lanka got the BOI approval for this Rs 650 million project recently. The plant will be constructed on 8,000 square metres land at the Mitsui Tokyo cement complex at Cod Bay, Trincomalee, where Mitsui has already established and successfully operates a cement plant. This will be the company's second foray into Sri Lanka's power generating sector. Biomass is an organic material which has stored sunlight in the form of chemical energy and its fuels include wood, wood waste, straw manure, sugarcane and several other byproducts of agriculture. Biomass has been the chief source of heating homes and buildings over thousands of years and considered eco friendly and it continues to be a major source of energy in much of the developing world. CEO, BOI North East Regional office Rear Admiral Terrence Sunderam said that the new plant would generate 6.6 mw of power using paddy husk and wood chips. The plant would produce electricity through a steam cycle utilising a paddy - husk fired boiler and a steam turbine. It would supplement power produced by Tokyo Cement's 3.5 mw HFO operated captive power plant that is at present used for cement grinding. The plant will employ a core cadre of 21 persons on three shifts working 24 hours, he said. |
