Unsurpassed workmanship Text and pix: Divakara Mohotti
Kalakeerthi Wimal Wickrama Surendra of Kalutara will go down in the annals of history for creating the Mace that adorn Parliament. He has also turned out the National Flag in silver. Surendra is credited with the artistic creation of the silver gate at the House and other metallic decorations. In his retirement, Surendra keeps himself busy turning out artistic creations with metal, wood and glass. He made a giant size lion out of metal weighing two and a half tons. It was carried in a procession during the Independence celebrations held in 1988. He also once made a wall clock consisting of the 12 planets and their symbols. Meanwhile, the Lathamandapa erected by him at Duwa temple, Kalutara South is a unique creation.
His portrait of Jesus Christ, turned out of metal adorns the St. Mary's Church at Maligawatte. The gold and silver Mace especially turned out for the Southern and Western Provincial Councils shows his inborn talent as an artist of the first order. As a youngster coming from a family of artists in Kamburugamuwa, Matara, he was fascinated with temple murals and sculpture. Later he was admitted to the Government College of Fine Arts, where he fine-honed his skills as an artist and sculptor. **** Back **** |
