War heroes commemorated by Ex-Servicemen's Association by L.B. Wijayasiri in Kandy Ven. Prof. Warakawe Dhammaloka Thera, the Secretary to the Asgiriya Mahavihara Chapter and the Head of the Natha Devala Viaharaya, Kandy said that the people of this country were greatly hopeful that the government's attempts to resume talks with the LTTE and the talks, would bring successful results so that peace would once again prevail in the country and the people of all communities would be able to live in peace. He made these observations at the ceremony held at the George E. de Silva Park, Kandy to commemorate those security personnel who lost their lives in World War I and World War II. The event was organised by Kandy branch of the Exservicemens' Association in Sunday morning. Central Provincial Governor Monty Gopallawa, Mayor of Kandy Kesara Senanayake paid floral tributes at the foot of the War Memorial in the company of Commander, Central Command Brig. Lalith Daulagala, Ex Army Chief General Cyril Ranatunga, DIG. Central Range Nimal Mediwaka, District Secretary A.M.L.B. Polgolle, President and Secretary of the Association Capt. R.M. Weerakoon and Capt. L.B. Dambakotuwa respectively. Ven. Dr. Warakawe Dhammaloka Thera in the course of his Anusasana added that the two world wars were fought for the security of the world and a large number of lives lost in those wars. In our country an internal war had been fighting for the past 22 years in which several thousands of Sinhalese and Tamil youths and even elders had lost their lives while lakhs of people became homeless. It was necessary to find a solution to that conflict at any cost. The people had their doubts that the war might resume again, despite the tendency was to continue the existing ceasefire until a final solution was arrived at. That was why the people were eager to know the outcome of peace talks. They all must bless the government that they would be able to resume peace talks and bring about a lasting solution so that the country could prosper and people of all communities could live in peace without fear or suspicion added the Nayake Thera. Fr. Stephen of Kandy City Mission, Maulavi A.C.M. Sadakthullah also performed religious sermons. A Guard of honour by Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (Volunteer 2) Kandy was performed in honour of slain soldiers in the two world wars. |
