by Sarath Malalasekera The Lanka Mahila Samithi will hold its annual exhibition and sale on November 16 and November 17 at the Lionel Wendt Hall, Colombo. A variety of attractive handicrafts produced by members of rural Mahila Samithi villages in sixteen districts of the island will be on display, said President Ms. Thilaka Perera. Fine crochet and beeralu lace, lace inserted tablecloths and teapoy covers, as well as cushions with traditional Sinhala embroidery which are a specialty of the South will be available. Sleeping mats, Sewing Boxes, Hambili for coins and Coasters from the Kalutara District could be purchased at the exhibition at a very reasonable prices, the Lanka Mahila Samithi President said. Children's clothes and a variety of Batik items including kaftans, shirts, wall hangings and tablecloths with napkins to match will also be on sale. She emphasised that the articles on display at the exhibition represent the efforts of rural women which is to primarily improve their family income, while preserving traditional handicrafts. |
