Sigiriya group correspondent President Chandrika Bandaranaike has established a teacher service to resuscitating its lost glory. 'Social values and ethical behaviour of teachers have been eroded with the emergence of commercialism. We cannot allow things to have their own ways, said Central Province Chief Minister, Sarath Ekanayake addressing a meeting in connection with World Teachers' Day at the Teldeniya Maha Vidyalaya. "Action has to be taken to suppress bad values and therefore social conventions and instruments like international conventions pave the way for the international community to share their knowledge and come to a consensus," he said. Speaking further the Chief Minister, said it was P. G. Mendis, a teacher union organiser of the SLFP who made UNO - to have this date of Teachers Day - established. Now this date October 6th coincides with the commemorative celebration of the late Minister of Education of 'Free Education' C. W. W. Kannangara. It is happy to note his name has once again come to be honoured, the Chief Minister said. CP Education Director P. M. J. Dassanayake, Teldeniya Director of Education S. M. Premaratne also spoke. |
