Kuliyapitiya group correspondent Education should contribute to produce good citizens who would develop talents and skills to serve for the people. The Deputy Director General of National Institute of Education Dr. (Ms) I. L. Ginige said speaking at the ceremony held to mark the annual prize distribution of Kuliyapitiya MMV. Dr. Ginige said the educated should develop the creativity if not the learning would be invalid. Good citizens should develop a balanced personality and be devoted to serve the country, nation and religion. However it is a pity that majority of our educated are having one foot on a foreign country. Such educateds have gathered only the knowledge by way of passing examinations through memorising books and notes. They are of the opinion that washing plates and dishes in a restaurant in a foreign country is a matter of pride. Their consideration is only the money which is not the result of quality education. What the nation needs is active students. The role of the teacher is directing the student to find facts. The latter should investigate into what the teacher directed him and learn. To achieve that end a change in the class room culture is necessary. A second language Sinhala to Tamil students and Tamil to Sinhalese students is taught from year three. In addition English is taught as an international language. English should be treated not as an ornament but as a means to an end. It is only a path to gather more new knowledge.
