by Rajmi Manatunga Private bus operators on the Negombo road will stage a one day strike today opposing a decision by transport authorities to deploy CTB buses from Bambalapitiya to Ja-Ela. Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (PBOA) Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne told the Daily News that private buses coming to Colombo from Negombo, Minuwangoda, Ja-Ela and Wattala will join in the one day token strike. "Ten CTB buses have been deployed on the Bambalapitiya-Ja-Ela route since last week by the Western Province Transport Authority (WPTA). This has severely affected the livelihood of private bus operators of the Ja-Ela-Colombo and Airport-Colombo routes,' he said. Wijeratne said they have lodged their protest on the matter to both the WPTA and the Transport Minister. "If the authorities ignore our problems we will resort to a full scale strike," he added. Meanwhile, WPTA sources told the Daily News that the CTB buses were deployed from Ja-Ela to Bambalapitiya based on the commuter demand. Today's proposed strike will be the fourth strike launched by private bus operators within one month causing inconvenience to commuters. Private bus operators went on strike on the 138 Kottawa-Colombo and 155 Dehiwela-Mattakkuliya routes a few weeks back followed by a strike by Galle Road bus operators last Wednesday. |
