Path-breaking 3D TV concept by young Lankan inventor

by Florence Wickramage

Young inventor Asanka with Sir Arthur C. Clarke.

For the first time in the world, a concept for a 3-dimensional viewing of either a televison landscape or a cinema footage has been developed by a young Sri Lankan inventor, Asanka Jayamal Rajakaruna, an old boy of Nalanda College.

After years of committed research starting from his school days, Asanka has developed his own theory for the invention.

Chancellor, University of Moratuwa and Sri Lanka Chancellor International Space University Fellow, Kings College London, Sir Arthur C. Clarke appreciating Asanka's works has said that Asanka has "developed a concept for a versatile and advanced three-dimensional system.

His Montaged Omni Prolific (MOMPRO) technology has potential applications in many areas of human endeavour, including tele-medicine, engineering designs and unmanned planetary exploration. And like many other technologies, it may also have some defence and military applications".

Asanka had his early education at the Lalith Athulathmudali College Mt. Lavinia and his secondary education at the Nalanda College Colombo.

Asanka said that while a Grade 5 student he read in a newspaper that a three-dimensional television concept would emerge in the future. Thereafter "with the help of my Science teacher and through books and newspaper articles on science, I developed my interest in a 3-dimensional television system", Asanka said. Asanka furthered his knowledge in this subject while studying in the Advanced Level Class whilst at the same time continuing with research according to theories found in Pure Mathematics and Physics.

Asanka has developed this new concept in technology on his own and has not attended any institution nor come under the influence of specialised tutors.

Explaining his invention, Asanka says that "at present the stereoscope systsem in use only serves to view an object in depth. But under this system this particular object cannot be viewed from different angles. Imagine one standing by a window viewing a landscape which could be viewed in depth and from different angles? The theory I have developed is for a similar 3-dimensional concept for television and is called MOMPRO which I have coined from the words Montaged Omni Profiled.

"I have also invented the relevant 3-D (MOMPRO-Vista) camera, through which the liveliness of the picture or a landscape could be captured similar to a live view as seen through a window."

Asanka is a member of the Nalanda College Inventors Club and the Aeronautics Engineering Society.

Sir Arthur C. Clarke says that "Asanka is keen to develop his concept into prototypes and beyond, and has already applied for a Sri Lankan Patent.

Unfortunately, there are no facilities or resources here to take this idea forward - he needs assistance from overseas institutions or benefactors" and while wishing this young inventor all success with this and other innovations, hopes that Asanka would be able to attract such assistance.
