LTTE behind Swiss man's killing, says Police by Ranil Wijayapala Police have enough reasons to suspect an LTTE hand behind the killing of the Swiss National in the Eastern Province, Eastern Province Deputy Inspector General of Police Neville Wijesinghe told the Daily News yesterday, despite the LTTE denying any connection to the killing. DIG Wijesinghe said investigations have revealed that the Swiss national had refused to meet the LTTE on several occasions despite the LTTE summoning him to settle a dispute relating a land owned by him in LTTE controlled areas in Batticaloa. He said the LTTE had sent their men several times to meet the Swiss national living in Jayanthipura area in Batticaloa after his marriage to a Tamil woman in the area. Investigations have also revealed that the Swiss national killed in the grenade attack had several bank accounts in Sri Lanka in addition to lands owned by him in the Batticaloa area. DIG Wijesinghe said according to statements given by the Swiss National's wife, they suspect LTTE men had arrived at his residence on the date of the incident in search of him. The wife had pleaded not to harass them saying her husband was not at home. However, one of the suspected LTTE men had lobbed a grenade into the bathroom killing the Swiss national. "So we have enough reasons to suspect the LTTE for the killing. The only thing is we have to identify the person responsible for the killing to prove this allegation," DIG Wijesinghe added. However, the LTTE issuing a press release on Tuesday dismissed the allegation that the LTTE was behind the killing saying that the allegations were based on speculations. "Our leadership views this with grave concern and condemns the killing. Perpetrators of this crime have in mind a criminal objective to disrupt the peace process," the release added. |
