Gunawardhana, Matara Central correspondent Information Technology could be manipulated for both the good and bad. Therefore it is the duty of those engaged in Information Technology to direct both the school-goers and the general public in the proper path. The Government on its part is performing its best duty to guide the schoolchildren by feeding them with historical and cultural knowledge along with Information Technology, said Minister of Ports, Aviation, Media and the Deputy Minister of Education Mangala Samaraweera. The Minister was speaking at the opening of an Exhibition on Information Technology at the St. Thomas Girls High School, Matara and was the chief invitee. A web-site for the school activities was also inaugurated in parallel with the opening of the Exhibition on Information Technology Day 2004. Minister Samaraweera said, crimes and malpractices have risen by leaps and bounds due to degeneration of ethics and discipline. The Minister said having observed the tremendous downfall of discipline in schools, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has directed the authorities to re-introduce the history as a subject into school curriculum. Information Technology is fast developing to meet the challenges of the world. Information Technology education in Sri Lanka should be adjusted to suit such challenges. School population should dedicate themselves to the task, as the Government has inaugurated several programmes in schools to promote Information Technology education, he said. It has now been envisaged to develop the Beach Park and to build a Public Library at Matara with the Indian aid. The Minister declared open the Exhibition "Techno-2004" - by linking the 'Thomian Girls' - web-site to the internet. Mementoes to winners of elocution contest on the subject "Information Technology" were also presented by the Minister. Director of Information Technology Ministry of Education Dilantha Withanage said, a fund has been inaugurated to promote Information Technology as a subject among schoolchildren and a director has been appointed to cover each education zone in the Island. Principal of the school Mrs. R. S. Pathirana also spoke. |
