The historical Kandy Lake is to be restored at Rs.65 million and brought to its pristine glory. The lake's restoration work will commence on October 30 at 10.00 am under the aegis of the Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation Ministry. Minister Anura Dissanayake will be the chief guest. The Maha Sangha including Prelates of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters, Deputy Minister Bimal Ratnayake and Kandy district Ministers and MPs will participate. According to history, King Sri Wickrema Rajasinghe was responsible in creating the Lake in 1810 in October, using human hands in front of the Temple of the Tooth Relic. Deveda Moolacharya is considered the architect of the Kandy Lake. The bund of the Kandy Lake is being used as a passage to pass between Malwathu Viharaya and Sri Dalada Maligawa. The Nuwara Wewa was constructed in a way that it was to be constantly fed by Hil Pan Kadura Ampitiya, through the Udawatta lake, Rajapihilla and Saranankara lake. The Kandy lake's water level is about 528.96 metres and water capacity is about 0.867 million cubic metres. The water covers 19.01 hectares and the circumference is about 3.37 kilometres. It covers 2.69 square kilometres and the maximum depth is about 12.90 metres. It is 529 metres above sea level. |
