Riyadh crash victims' bodies arrive here

From Mohammed Rasooldeen in Riyadh

The bodies of four Sri Lankan women who died in a road accident last week in Saudi Arabia were dispatched to Colombo by Saudi Arabian Airlines flight No SV 784 and arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport yesterday morning.

Sri Lankan embassy officials including the mission's Labour Welfare Officer, Mohammed Jiffrey were present while the bodies were formally handed over to the airlines officials.

"The brief delay in repatriating the bodies were mainly due to the work involved in processing the papers connected to the accident," Sri Lankan Ambassador Ibrahim Sahib Ansar told Daily News adding that the intermittent work schedule during the holy month of Ramadan also disabled the mission to reach SriLankan Airlines flight in time for repatriation.

However, he said, the Kingdom's national carrier operates direct flight to Colombo from Riyadh and this made it more convenient to send the bodies by Saudi Arabian Airlines. The mishap took place when a bus carrying 37 Sri Lankan and four Bangladeshi women workers collided with an oil tanker in Aflaj 350 kms away from the Saudi capital.

A total of 25 Sri Lankan women admitted to the nearby Al Aflaj Government Hospital have been discharged.
