Superfine International Garments nets $ 10.4 m turnover annually

In 1996 K. V. K. Gamage set up a garment buying office and named it Superfine International Garments (Pvt) Ltd. Thus began a journey, where strong ties of friendship from the trade secured orders with small-scale garment manufacturers. It gave him the impetus to set up an apparel venture in Katuwana in the Hambantota District employing 650 workers, a spokesman for the company said.

He said Superfine International Garments has modern plants in Katuwana, the first and the second in the Industrial Estate in Udukawa at Weligama, also a BOI project employing 400 workers. In addition, the company has ventured into backward integration projects - a washing plant named Textile Allied Services (Pvt) Ltd catering to most of the garment factories in the Southern Province and also serving all the manufacturing facilities in the Koggala Industrial Zone and Super Pack International (Pvt) Ltd, a modern corrugated carton board factory at the Industrial Estate in Karandeniya.

This strategic approach ensured that the entirety of Superfine International Garments is a complete operation, that is geared to creating value in its manufacturing processes, while going beyond the conventional norm of supplying requirements in the garment trade.

Superfine International Garments has today ventured into a product range that serves a host of celebrated international brands. Concentrating on producing quality, each member of the team makes an individual, quest to ensure that only products of the highest quality will reach the buyer. The renowned standardisation systems including the traffic light and in line follow up system, 7-0 and JC Penny systems are followed diligently to guarantee excellent results. The company received the ISO 9001 - 2000 quality standards certification on October 15.

The spokesman said with Nike, K mart, Walmart, J C Penny, V.O.S, Dickice and Target being among their most valuable buyers who have endorsed the quality of their garments through regular social compliance evaluations, the company enjoys the accolade of not having had a single instance of returns in all its years of exports.

The Sportswear includes jackets, pants, water sports gear, swimming shorts, hunting, fishing and safety vests and trackwear. The ladies wear encompassed blouses, skirts and skivvies and track wear shirts, shorts and pants and children's collection. Superfine enjoys a comfortable turnover of US$ 10.4 million per year, notching up an impressive 3.2 million pieces produced annually.

While being recognised internationally as a reliable and quality manufacturer of a range of protective and safety wear, sports and leisure wear, the company supplies a range of hunting clothes to the United States, he said.

Our markets extend to other countries including Canada, Mexico, South Africa and Europe, and we also supply some buying houses in the Far East. The USA receives 90% of our exports while Europe and the others the balance 10%. The value we place on building long lasting relationships with our buyers and valued business partners has kept us in good stead creating, retaining and developing the business we conduct with them, he said.

From 1998, we have been celebrated winners at the Exporters Awards conducted by the National Chamber of Exporters and the Sri Lanka Entrepreneur Awards organised by the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Sri Lanka, both at the provincial and national levels winning awards and National Awards for export excellency.

In addition, we have also been the recipient in the year 2002 of the Best Performance Award in a ceremony conducted by the Council of International Awards. Our Bronze and Silver medals as well as our bronze and silver statuettes are showcased and these are an incentive to our entire team whose hard work, true commitment and motivation has taken us to where we are today, he said.

The Head Office is in Mt. Lavinia. Fabric Inspection machines too have been purchased to improve quality.

We also help the community, with corporate social responsibility, he said.
