Angelo Mathews - Josephian sportsman of the year

The 'Colours Nite' to felicitate the Josephian sportsmen who had excelled and distinguished themselves in various forms of sports was held at the Sports Complex Auditorium on 15th October, 2004.

The chief guest was Joel Selvanayagam, a distinguished Josephian sportsman and now the Chairman of Hovael Construction (Pvt) Ltd.

At the outset the energetic Rector Rev. Fr. Victor Silva glowing with joy due to the excellent performances of his charges and who to-date has given tremendous support and encouragement to foster sports to reach lofty heights in the college thanked the chief guest profusely for his magnanimous gestures and bountiful generosity in sponsoring the main events at college.

He remarked that the Josephians renewed fire was too much for the opponents. He was grateful to the supportive sports council who had played and continue to play a significant role to bring sports to the lime light. Finally he encouraged the budding sportsmen not to give up their efforts until they succeed.

The chief guest observed that he was proud to be associated with the activities of his alma mater.

Chandimal and 2nd connection provided some scintillating and lilting music which kept the audience spell bound to synchronizing dancing by a beavy of nimble footed girls attired in glittering costumes added colour to the stage decked in blue and white.

Undoubtedly they looked professional alright.

Mericural bit of dancing to a well known/popular Sinhala song mesmerized the audience together with a dance in rhythmic fashion based on a baila tune almost brought the roof down. Truly a wonderful performance which won the hearts of the audience who were gasping for breath as it were.

The Wushu display very dexterously and skilfully illustrated the finer points of the marital art. This band of Josephians proved that they were second to none in this art. The onlookers would had been surprised to witness such a talented display.

The proud sister of Amila Perera collected the awards on behalf of his brother who was abroad. He was awarded 'The Josephian Blue' for 2002 and also carried the prestigious award being 'The Sportsman of the Year 2002' for distinguishing himself in the field of athletic representing Sri Lanka at the Asian Athletic Championship held in Sri Lanka. Further he represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Junior Athletic Championship held in Thailand thus bringing honour to the college.

Angelo Mathews the versatile and gifted all rounder won colours for the year 2003. He was also adjudged 'The Sportsman of the Year (2003)' for his remarkable achievements truly a potential cricketer of Sri Lanka. He received a thundering applause from the audience which reechoed and reverberated in the sports complex.

Josephians who represented Sri Lanka in 2003 were not forgotten. They were lined up on the stage. The audience appreciated their contribution in their respective fields by heartily applauding them.

Masters-in-charge of various sports and coaches were presented with plaques for their contribution for the uplift of sports. The men and women (minor staff) behind the scene were not forgotten.

Jude Rodrigo, the head perfect proposed the vote of thanks. He mentioned the name of Chaminda Vaz who had brought great glory and honour to S.J.C. by his selection to the world test team and the one day international side.

To the strains and the rendition of the national anthem the proceedings were brought to a close. Truly a glorious and a enjoyable evening to be remembered where the weather gods also benignly smiled ensuring an azure blue sky and refraining from interfering with their usual evening showers.
