Armitage to visit Sri Lanka next month

WASHINGTON, Thursday (AFP) US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage plans to make a four-nation tour of South Asia next month, visiting Afghanistan, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, senior State Department officials said Wednesday. Armitage's itinerary has not yet been finalized but he is expected to leave Washington shortly after the November 2 US presidential election, the officials told AFP.

Armitage is deeply involved in the Sri Lankan peace process.

Armitage's trip comes after Powell claimed the United States scripted a historic telephone call between the prime ministers of nuclear arch rivals India and Pakistan that led to restoration of diplomatic ties early last year.

Appeal for help

Visharada Shiran Ratnayake of 38, Mallikarama Road, Ratmalana, appeals to the public for financial aid to save his five-year-old daughter R.M. Tharushi Geethika Divyangani who needs surgical treatment at the Asiri Hospital, Colombo at an approximate cost of Rs. 350,000.

He states that his daughter developed a brain tumour which was operated by Dr. Collin Samarasinghe but the tumour re-appeared for the second time.

Dr. Fred Perera, Neurosurgeon of Apollo Hospital, Colombo said this disorders due to craniophanyngioma which needs craniosurgery and excision under Neuronavigation at the Asiri Surgical Hospital at a cost of Rs. 350,000.

Contributions can be sent to Account No. 0030-650385-101 of Seylan Bank, Mount Lavinia in favour of R.M. Shiran Ratnayake.

Help save her life

Mrs. G.G. Nilmini a mothers of three, of Danketiya, Haburugala, Bentota is suffering from Breast Cancer. Consultant Surgeon Dr. D.D. Ranasinghe of Sri Jayawardenepura General Hospital has recommended an urgent surgery, to save her life.

The surgery to be performed at the Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital is estimated to cost Rs. 150,000. Her husband, a labourer at the Bentota Post Office says his family is unable to foot this bill due to their financial plight. He requests philanthropists and the public to assist his wife's cause by sending financial contributions possible to help expedite the surgery. All contributions should be remitted to savings account No. 207-030568-8 at the People's Bank, Aluthgama.
