Sanwardhana Sangramaya begins today

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will launch the Government's new islandwide development initiative 'Sanwardhana Sangramaya' in Anuradhapura today.

All District and Divisional Secretaries will make arrangements to implement Development projects in their respective areas by meeting the people and identifying their needs and requirements.

Through the 'Sanwardhana Sangramaya' it is hoped to complete all development projects which have been held up due to elections or other reasons within the next three months.

Under this program a large number of new projects would also be launched simultaneously. Foremost among them would be the Hambantota Port and Digana national playgrounds, Dharma Mandiraya at Lovamahapaya premises, Weheragala project, Deduru Oya Project, Noraichcholai Power Plant, Badulla - Kandy Raja Mawatha, Colombo National Cultural Centre and Muslim Cultural Centre, Bastian Bus Stand, Jaffna cultural centre and the Kaluganga projects.

Line ministries and Local Government Institutions would implement these projects utilising foreign aid. Foundation stones for these main projects as well as several other projects would be laid before the end of this year and the responsibility of carrying forward these projects in an efficient manner would be entrusted to Provincial Councils, District Secretary and Divisional Secretaries.

The Samurdhi Ministry will launch a key development drive titled "Suwahas Jana Pubuduwa" to uplift the socio-economic conditions of country's low income groups as an integral part of the "Sanwardhana Sangramaya" initiated by President Kumaratunga.

The Sri Lanka Samurdhi Authority (SLSA) will implement the programme throughout the country on the same day including the North-East areas as an ambitious bid to uplift the lives of the people.

Suwahas Jana Pubuduwa will be a two pronged project, namely "Jana Pubuduwa" earmarking 30,000 low income families who will be offered an opportunity to augment their income level through self-employment and " Gam Pubuduwa" where the infrastructure development of 13,223 identified Grama Niladari divisions will be carried out.

Anuradhapura has been identified as one of the priority areas for the Government's Sanwardhana Sangramaya (Development Drive), with Rs.100 million being allocated for the district. Among the development projects lined up for Anuradhapura are a Dhamma Hall for pilgrims, an arts centre, a new bus stand and a village reawakening program under the Samurdhi Ministry. The Dhamma hall can accommodate up to 3,000 pilgrims.

Several programs initiated by the North Central Provincial Council (NCPC) parallel to these projects will also be started on the same day. These include a new auditorium/chamber for the NCPC.
