Former TNA MP shot dead by suspected LTTE gunmen in Batticaloa

Unidentified gunmen suspected to be of the LTTE shot dead former TNA MP Kingsley Rajanayagam who resigned from his seat in Batticaloa, from the present Parliament under pressure from the Tigers.

Eastern Province DIG Neville Wijesinghe told the Daily News last night that the murder took place around 6.15 last evening.

The DIG said, Rajanayagam's personnel bodyguard, a Police constable, had also been injured in the incident and was later admitted to the Batticaloa hospital.

Rajanayagam was shot dead when he was getting into his car on his way home from the Kalviyankadu area after visiting a small workshop run by him with personnel bodyguard, Police Constable Hemantha Dissanayake.

According to DIG Wijesinghe there had been no evidence that the gunmen had come there in a vehicle. "The only evidence we have is the Police constable injured in the incident and the Police are yet to get a statement from him", Wijesinghe added.

Rajanayagam (63) a father of three contested the last general election from the Batticaloa district obtaining 38,633 preferential votes but, tendered his resignation to give way to another Member decided by the party.

According to sources Rajanayagam tendered his resignation due to LTTE threats owing to his loyalty to breakaway LTTE leader Karuna.
