LTTE willing to release home guards Monday

by Ranil Wijayapala

The LTTE has told the Nordic truce monitors that the two home guards under their detention will be released on Monday the earliest after producing them before the LTTE Court in Sampur.

Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Deputy Chief Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News yesterday night that the LTTE had conveyed this to the SLMM after consulting LTTE Political Wing leader S. P. Thamilselvan currently touring Europe.

He said since the two home guards were arrested in the Sampur area, they will be granted bail by the LTTE Magistrate in Sampur on Monday the earliest and will be handed over to their family members.

Haukland said the LTTE will convey this message to the two home guards' family members.

The LTTE will release the two home guards on bail following the LTTE cadres in remand prison in Batticaloa were released on Thursday after been granted bail by the Court.

The two home guards D. Sarath Bandara and Chandana Piyasiri were abducted by the LTTE on August 10 in Gonabendivewa area in Trincomalee along with two T 56 weapons and a magazine.

The next of kin of the two home guards are still continuing their sit on fast protest in Trincomalee demanding their release.
