Swiss colours on film at BMICH

The Swiss Film Season 2004 presented by the Asian Film Centre in association with Swiss Films (Zurich) and the Embassy of the Switzerland in Sri Lanka will be held at BMICH Cinema, Colombo from October 23 to 30 (except Poya Day 27).

The festival will be repeated in Trincomalee and Jaffna from November 03 to 07 and 17 to 21 respectively.

Seven feature films accompanied by seven short and animation films will be screened at this festival. All films are 35 mm colour and with English subtitles.

Les petites couleurs (A Little Colour) directed by Patricia Plattner will be screened on Saturday, October 23. This is a story of a young hairdresser who is beaten regularly by her husband. After a terrible argument with her husband Francis, a violent and impulsive man, Christelle runs away and takes an option on a new life.

Award wining film Escape to Paradise directed by Nino Jacusso. To be screened on October 24 tells the story of a Kurdish family escaping the ethnic conflict in Turkey and seeking asylum in Switzerland. This portrays present-day Switzerland and is a realistic, amusing and dramatic film.

The film scheduled for Monday 25 is Azzurro (director-Denis Rabaglia). It dramatizes the relationship between a grandfather and a granddaughter. The grandfather wants to revisit the past, and the granddaughter to see what the future holds in store for her.

Young film director Anna Luif's first feature film Little Girl Blue, on the 26th is about a teenage girl who moves to a new town and falls in love with a young boy who is her father's lover's son. It is bound to have serious consequences. This film is screened under a most suitable for adults rating.

On dirait le Sud (Back for More) directed by Vincent Pluss was awarded Best Feature Film, Swiss Film Prize in 2003. It is an emotional relationship between a divorced father, his children, his ex-wife and her lover. (October 28)

The film to be shown on Friday 29th under a Most Suitable for Adults rating Utopia Blues is the only feature film among the many documentaries directed by Stefan Haupt. It has bagged numerous awards at the International Film Festivals. It is a story of a fun-loving youth who tries to make his dream of total freedom became reality, but unexpectedly becomes bitter and earnest.

On October 30, the closing film is Oltre it confine (Across the Border) directed by award winning film director Rollanda Colla. It is arguably the highlight of this film season. The story takes place in 1993. The meeting of an Italian woman architect and a Bosnian refugee: the shock of two worlds and two wars. It is screened an Adults Only rating.

The short & animation films to be shown along with these seven features reflect the high quality and wide range of Swiss cinema today and confirm its place among the leading filmmaking nations of Europe.

The festival will be inaugurated by the Chief Guest Bernardino Regassoni, Ambassador of Switzerland to Sri Lanka and the Guest of Honour Ms. Patricia Plattner, the director of the opening film Les petites couleurs (A Little Colour), at the BMICH Cinema on Saturday 23rd October 2004 at 06.30 pm.

The screening of the same film will follow the inauguration ceremony only for invitees. Public screenings will commence on October 23. Shows will be held until October 30 at 4.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. daily except on October 27.

This is the fourth such Swiss Film Season organized in Sri Lanka. The first collaboration between the three organizations was in 1992.

This was a unique event in Sri Lanka's film history since it was the first comprehensive introduction that our audiences received to the cinema of Switzerland. The second edition in 1996 and the third in 2000 reinforced the budding relationship.

Emerging dancers take first step to stardom

Chaminda Kumara Weerasekera is a popular, emerging dancer who can be seen on TV and live concerts. His dancing talents have won him rave reviews in the media.

Chaminda is one of the talented young dancers who has stepped into the limelight from the Budawatte Rangayathanaya. As an exponent of various dance forms, Chaminda has participated in many dance programmes in Sri Lanka and abroad with his Guru, veteran dancer Kulasiri Budawatte.

A major milestone of Chaminda's dancing career was the formation of a his own dancing institute named Minidu Kalayathanaya at Maharagama, which was ceremonially opened by Budawatte three years ago.

Today his Kalayathanaya has opened avenues to a large number of girls and boys to improve their creative skills and talents in the sphere of dancing. The majority of students of the Minidu Kalayathanaya are aged five to 15.

In order to provide an opportunity for his students to display their talents, Chaminda together with his students have organised their maiden concert which will be held at the National Youth Centre, Maharagama at 6.30 pm on October 24.

This is the first time he will be conducting his own concert with his Minidu Kalayathanaya students. Nearly 50 students are scheduled to present dance performances at this concert. This is the first time that they will be displaying their talents in public.

This would be a new experience to all these dancers. Nearly 10 dance items of students will be included in the show. In order to embellish the event, several popular dancers will also perform dance items. The concert will be conducted under the patronage of Chaminda's Guru Budawatte.

Chaminda extended his sincere appreciation to his teachers Kulasiri Budawatte and Nemali Budawatte for their assistance towards the success of his artistic career.
