SLPA to increase container handling by 10-15% The number of containers handled by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) is expected to increase by 10-15 percent in the coming years as a result of the promotion campaign embarked on by the new management during the last four months. SLPA Chairman Dileepa Wijesundare, told the media that there is an increased confidence among the major shipping lines on the Colombo Port present. "In August 2004, the SLPA handled 205,817 containers which is an increase of 10.7 percent compared to the corresponding period of the last year," he said. The chairman said the SLPA formulated a business strategy and obtained the approval of the President and the Government and once it was implemented SLPA would become the most efficient and productive institution in the country. He also said that during the last four months the Board was able to put an end to the unhealthy competition between the two terminal operators and it has helped to focus on promoting Colombo Port as a united body. Wijesundare said the new management has been able to immensely improve the facilities for the employees at the port and as a result the productivity of the employees have increased. "We have improved their health and recreation facilities. Our efforts in improving the relationship between the workers and the officials have been successful. These efforts have helped to increase productivity in handling containers," Wijesundare said. (CK) |
