2,000 paramedics for health service

The Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry has decided to recruit 2000 para-medics and 1,000 Family Health Officers to resolve the existing shortage of personnel in the health service.

Accordingly, out of these 2,000 to be recruited as para-medics will be selected on the district basis and their marks achieved at the Advanced Level examination will be the criteria for recruitment.

"Those recruited will be trained in 11 categories including pharmacists, medical laboratory technicians, public health inspectors and physio-therapists," Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told the Daily News.

The 2,000 paramedics will be recruited in two batches and arrangements have already been made to recruit 1,000 this year while the balance will be recruited next May. The spokesman said the existing shortage of paramedics at Government hospitals will be remedied after these 2,000 personnel were appointed to Government hospitals completing their due training period.

The Ministry has also recruited 1000 family health officers countrywide. Minister de Silva explained that the UPFA Government focuses on improving the human and physical resources in the health sector. "Measures have been taken to fill a large number of vacancies in the health service and ensure a better and qualitative service to the people," he added.
