At the 170th session of the Executive Board of the UNESCO, Sri Lanka has submitted a draft resolution on "Misuse of religious symbols and expressions" inviting the Director General of UNESCO to take necessary measures through the organization's programs and activities to create awareness among peoples of the sensitivities of all communities and take necessary steps to respect the diversities of cultures and refrain from such misuse of religious symbols, images and expressions. Minister of Information and Media Mangala Samaraweera who attended the plenary session of the UNESCO opened the general debate after the Director General's statement and indicated in his speech that such a resolution will be presented to the UNESCO by Sri Lanka. He further said that people in the marketing, advertising and entertainment industry hurt the emotions of many roots and communities not through malicious intent but through lack of awareness by what they consider artistic or interesting thereby causing devastating and harrowing impact on number of other cultures. He stressed the need for the UNESCO to take a pro active role in creating this awareness. Many Asian and Arabian countries have already indicated their strong support for this resolution, he said. The Sri Lankan delegation to the UNESCO consisted of the Minister Mangala Samaraweera, Professor Senaka Bandaranaike, Ananda Gunasekara - Ambassador to France & permanent delegate to UNESCO and Saroja Sirisena - UNESCO mission head in Paris. |
