Unique moment of pride and joy

by Chandani Jayatilleke

It was a unique moment of pride and joy. It was also a rare union of a talented group of children, their proud parents and a group of overjoyed journalists and well-wishers.

The winners of the Daily News children's art and essay competition proudly walked away with cash awards and certificates when ANCL Chairman Janadasa Peiris presented the awards at a simple ceremony held concurrent to the opening of the art exhibition at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery yesterday.

The Daily News chose 250 paintings from over 1,000 entries for this special exhibition, which concludes today.

Director Editorial, Karunarathna Paranawithana in his opening remarks said it was a happy moment for ANCL and the Daily News.

He said the institution is geared to support and promote activities organised to boost many talents of the children. The ANCL Chairman said it was a special day for ANCL and the Daily News as it was the first time that the Daily News had organised an art and essay competition for children and that was to mark Universal Children's Day.

"This is only a part of the Lake House program to mark Universal Children's Day.

Dinamina, our sister daily and Thinakaran, the Tamil daily have also organised similar competitions.

ANCL programs on Universal Children's Day are also connected to the national program 'Samanala Carnival' organised by the Ministry of Information and Media scheduled to be held from October 10 to 18 at the BMICH," the Chairman said.

The Chairman also said as a newspaper committed to raise the standards of children's welfare and promote their talent, the Daily News has always been in the forefront of children's education.

The Daily News publishes many exclusive pages for children; the education page on Friday in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and weekly children's pages on Thursdays.

"We are committed to carry out this duty in the future as well, with the maximum space for children."

He said in addition to the Daily News, the weekly Sunday Observer has launched a separate tabloid paper for children called Junior Observer. The ANCL also publishes a Sinhala weekly for children titled Mihira.

"We would like to invite all children to make use of these opportunities and improve their knowledge and creative skills. Today, the world is moving towards a knowledge based society while an information and technological revolution is taking place in a globalised world," the Chairman said.

As a media organisation, the ANCL is committed to spread knowledge within our society. "Though it is a great challenge to the media personnel, we are trying the best to give the latest update of information to our readers.

In this endeavour, we pay special attention to our children who are the future leaders of this country. This competition and exhibition is a part of the effort taken by ANCL to serve children and to induce them to be a knowledge and activity-oriented young generation."

Daily News Editor, Geoff Wijesinghe said if all of us had the innocence of our children, this world would have been a wonderful place.

"I am proud to witness the teamwork displayed by the staff members of the Daily News, led by Malani Govinnage (in-charge, Children's Page) over the last few weeks - arranging and organising all the hard work connected to this competition," Wijesinghe said.

Associate Editor, Lyn Ockersz in his closing remarks, said the Daily News was proud to have held such a meaningful competition and show their talent by way of an exhibition.

He thanked all children who participated in the competition and their parents and teachers for encouraging them to take to extra curricular activities in school.

"The ANCL Board of Directors should also be commended for sponsoring an event of this nature which would help bring out children's talent and creativity. At the same time, I would like to thank Malani Govinnage who exerted herself for organising this event over the last two months," he said.

He also thanked all fellow employees in the Features Desk and others who made numerous contributions to make the event memorable.

ANCL Board of Directors and senior officials and a distinguished gathering of invitees were present.
