25th National Conference of ICASL to focus on defining issues

Greater recognition of better corporate governance practices, pressures for regulatory compliance, large corporate failures and the growing need for risk management - issues that have redefined the role of today's accounting professional - will be the focus of the 25th National Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (ICASL).

The flagship event of the country's apex national accountancy body, the Annual Conference will be inaugurated on November 3 at the Colombo Plaza Hotel, the Institute said this week.

"This year's conference would be of great significance to the profession and the corporate sector in general as the deliberations could lead to a defining moment in the evolution of accountancy practices in this country," ICASL President Indrajith Fernando said.

Conference Chairman N. R. Gajendran said: "Constantly changing consumer patterns, shortened product cycles, emergence of electronic commerce, and innovative financial instruments have made managing modern businesses more challenging. Our aim is to discuss issues pertaining to good governance, accountability and to build confidence within the accounting profession."

Adding stature to this momentous event, will be a simultaneous meeting in Colombo of Board of the Confederation of Asian and Pacific Accountants (CAPA) the world's largest regional accountancy organisation. The ICASL was appointed to the Board, the executive body of CAPA, in May 2004.

Themed 'Transcending Horizons,' this year's National Conference will attempt to equip Chartered Accountants to be thorough professionals who would uphold an unwavering commitment to professional ethics, have a sense of duty towards public interest, proficiency in an evolving body of knowledge and a high standard of excellence. The keynote speech will be delivered by Tony Fernandez, the CEO of Air Asia Berhad.

Twelve technical papers will be presented at the Conference, which will address the core values and challenges faced by those in the accounting profession. The technical sessions will begin on November 4 and end on November 6.

Two papers to be presented on 'Corporate Social Responsibility' by Justice Mark Fernando (Public Expectation) and Managing Director of Eagle Insurance Chandra Jayaratne (Reconciling Shareholder Demands) will address one of the most topical subjects of the day.
